The MUSE Framework (Multi-Universal Storytelling Essentials) is a foundation. It's open-source, and designed to: 1. handle conflict resolution, and 2. offer a hackable starting point for those who enjoy story-focused roleplay without an overwhelming mechanical crunch.
MUSE is not a game engine in the traditional sense, but a framework that needs a world to be layered on top of it. While it can be used out of the box for one-shots and smaller adventures, we suggest GMs and developers crafting long term content add Custom Items, Talents, and entirely new mechanics onto the frame.
The good news is that MUSE can support any fiction, from sci-fi, to fantasy, to horror.
While navigating these pages, Text in Yellow
is designed to be read by developers and Gamemasters who are planning to build their own games and worlds atop the MUSE framework.
While Text in Green
contains specific notes intended for players and GMs who are new to MUSE and learning to play.
Regardless, we recommend everyone interested in MUSE (devs, players, and GMs alike) start by reading Rolling Dice, then proceed to Character Creation.
GMs running one-shots and smaller adventures
should be able to start playing 30-40 minutes after sitting down to read these rules.
