TLDR;
all the effort we've poured into MUSE RPG over the years would be done whether we were making it for the public or not. We are proud to give it away, and hope others benefit from our labor of love.
How We Came to Be
In the Fall of 2021 I gathered a few friends to start a new game, venturing across a land called Ilhdeinia. Early into that game we could all feel we were hitting a wall. The world was ours, the characters were ours, but the system was one we were fighting to bend into an Ilhdeinian shape.
To combat this, we started work on the earliest version of MUSE in September 2022, with no plans to take those efforts beyond our own table. Five months later, following some upheaval in the broader TTRPG community (if you were there in 2023, you know what we're talking about), we realized we wanted to offer a free, open sandbox in which to play.
In February of 2023 we shared our first version of the rules, and what started as a small project for six players in El Paso, Texas then exploded in the best way possible.
Later, painfully fumbling our way through online courses to learn how to make our character sheet app, we found ourselves blown away by the FOSS and Open Source community as a whole. It changed the way that we saw collaboration, and the way we operate MUSE RPG. You can see more about this in Worlds.
All of this is to say it's been a journey to get where we are, but where we find ourselves today is exactly where we need to be.
Always Improving
We believe this site should act as a living document. Whereas a book is sold as-is and can only be updated by future editions, MUSE will always reside here on the web, constantly evolving, expanding, growing, and improving.
We encourage you to use this site (although our rules can easily be copied at the top of each page) as well as our Character Sheet App for the best way to play.
